I loved staying with Nicola: the bed sheets were clean and nobody made me wear their shoes.

From Nicola's, I ran around to Porthcawl, where I stayed in a strange hostel-type place. There were lots of bunk beds in every room but I seemed to be the only person there. It was right behind a fairly bleak-looking amusement arcade containing a Wimpy with a 1* hygiene rating proudly stuck up in the window. Could you actually be awarded zero? I wondered.

I wandered back into the town centre and couldn't seem to find anywhere open that would sell me anything resembling dinner. I ended up in Subway, yet another exotic destination to tick off my adventure to-do list, then went to the Spar and bought some porridge pots to have for breakfast the next morning. After the warmth of Nicola's home, Porthcawl felt pretty bleak.
